The Boy James
by Alexander Wright
23 -26 feb
A touching new tale from Belt Up Theatre comes to the South Hill arts centre after a universally critically acclaimed and sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2010.
You are invited to take the hand of a wide eyed child as he leads you into the wonderful world of his imagination. Let your adult sensibilities go and join him in his games and forget the cruel world on the other side of the window.
Alexander Wright’s new play, inspired by the life and works of J.M. Barrie plays with the playful land of childhood. Told through the eyes of a young boy forced to face the reality of growing up as James, his idol, mentor and friend must leave behind his childish naivety and accept the world outside. At times beautifully imaginative and at others totally heartbreaking this play is a dizzying adventure through the transition from innocence to experience.

Antigone
byAlexander Wright after Sophocles
23 - 26 feb
From the critically acclaimed Belt Up Theatre following a total sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe festival comes the reinvention of a classic.
Based on Sophocles’ timeless tale of politics, family feuds and rituals, Alexander Wright’s new adaptation is a melodic portrait of a family in the wake of devastation. Telling the story of Antigone, a princess faced with an impossible decision and the astounding repercussions this has upon her family and more dangerously, the entire country.
In this lamentful re-imagining, audience members are requested to pay their respects to the late princess, Antigone. But this is a dreamlike world; the solemn soiree that the audience find themselves part of shifts and changes. Ghosts of the recent war echo around them, the conscience of Kings stalk between them, and lovers left behind weep alongside them.

Odyssey
by Dominic J Allen. inspired by Homer
Site-specific and interactive re-imagining of a classic transferring to the South Hill arts centre after a sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Critically acclaimed company Belt Up Theatre invite you to go on a journey alongside a lone homeward bound traveller as he seeks a safe have haven in a post apocalyptic nightmare. A haunting adventure that tests the boundaries of human persistence.
A new play by Dominic J Allen under the influence of Homer’s epic poem, this is a claustrophobically intimate production that is certainly not for the faint of heart. A legend of monstrous proportion explodes: fast, furious and inches away from the audience’s eyes. Performed by an energetic cast of four with a dramatis personae of hundreds this is storytelling in swift, breathtaking and exhausting form
‘It doesn't so much inhabit the venue as haunt it, as if what you are witnessing is a terrifying vision conjured from your own warped imagination’ **** Lyn Gardner, Guardian on The Trial.
