How To Compose An APA Research Paper Executive Summary

Are you in the process of writing an APA research paper executive summary, but you have no idea how to do so? Then take the time to learn the variety of rules that must be followed. By doing so you’ll be equipped to write the kind of executive summary that’s going to get you the top marks.

What Is An Executive Summary

An executive summary should be detailed enough to be able to stand as a document on its own without the research paper. It is typically between 1 and 3 pages in length, but this depends on the length of the research paper.

Also the summer should be aimed at a particular audience that would be interested in reading the paper. This will give the audience a reason to read the paper after having read the executive summary. Furthermore, the paper should not use first-person writing, instead it should be written in a formal tone.

General Guidelines

If you are writing an executive summary for your research paper for the first time, then consult the following guidelines:

  • The first lines of the summary should state the point of your paper. This will allow the audience to quickly identify what they will be reading about.
  • The order of the points that are presented in the research paper, should also be presented in the same order as in the executive summary. This will ensure continuity, which will allow the readers to easily navigate through the report in order to get to the section they are most interested in.
  • Make sure all the information present is a summary – there is no need to go into detailed discussion about any of the points made.
  • The use of headings in the summary is a good idea, however you should avoid using the exact same headings as in the research paper. This will prevent giving the audience the feeling of reading the same thing twice.
  • After having written the summary read over it, and pay attention to the clarity. Because you have to write in a concise manner you might end up not including enough detail. This can leave the audience frustrated.
  • Give the summary to a friend who knows nothing about your topic. Ask them if the summary is clear enough that the topic of the research paper can easily be identified.

Writing Advice

Make sure you always follow the specific finalizing instructions from your teacher, because they will be marking your research paper and looking for those things.

Don’t rely completely on your word processor’s spell check, because it won’t catch everything. Print your research paper if you can, and give it a good old fashioned proofread.
