Research Paper Help For Newbies: Familiarizing Yourself With Common Writing Formats

If you are new to the world of research papers, you may be a bit unsure of how to dive into the waters of common writing formats. Thankfully, there are many tricks and tips you can use to familiarize yourself with them.

APA

APA is the format created by the American Psychological Association. This is a writing format not only used for psychology research papers, but for research papers in the field of behavioral sciences, social sciences, and other sciences. It requires:

  • A cover page equipped with a running head at the upper left hand side of the paper, the first few words of your title followed by the page number on the upper right hand corner of each page, and your name, title, school, and course centered in the middle of the page
  • An abstract
  • An introduction containing background
  • A literature review
  • A body. If you conducted an experiment for this research paper then the body of your text will have the methods/materials section and the results section
  • A discussion section/conclusion
  • Reference page
  • Appendix

Everything should be double spaced, in Times New Roman font, and size twelve text. There should be one inch margins all around the paper.

MLA

MLA is another format that is commonly used for English papers or literature. This is one of the simplest and most commonly required writing formats, so getting to know it early on will save you a lot of later as you continue down your academic path. It requires:

  • Your name, the date, the course, and the teacher all in the upper left hand corner with your last name and page numbers at the far right hand corner of each page.
  • Beneath that is the title of your paper
  • Then comes the introduction
  • The body
  • The conclusion
  • The works cited

Everything should be double spaced, in Times New Roman font, and size twelve text. There should be one inch margins all around the paper.

Chicago

Chicago is another format that might be required of you. The key difference here is that instead of citing the reference you use within the text, you are to incorporate footnotes at the bottom of each page with the bibliographic information. And, as with the two aforementioned formatting styles, everything should be double spaced, in Times New Roman font, and size twelve text. There should be one inch margins all around the paper.

Writing Advice

Make sure you always follow the specific finalizing instructions from your teacher, because they will be marking your research paper and looking for those things.

Don’t rely completely on your word processor’s spell check, because it won’t catch everything. Print your research paper if you can, and give it a good old fashioned proofread.
