5 great aspects to consider when picking law research paper topics

For anyone who is struggling to pick a topic for your law research paper there are many ways you can find inspiration. You can review:

  1. Course notes to see if there are any topics you may have wanted to discuss further or analyze but did not have the time
  2. Textbooks to see if there are any sections that may interest you
  3. Writing guides and sample papers to look for genres or general topics about which you may want to write
  4. Magazine articles you read or television shows you watch
  5. Recent movies or Political legislation or campaigns

Once you have a topic in mind there are a few writing pitfalls you should avoid:

Avoid using words that you don’t know

A lot of students use the thesaurus button on their word document to try and replace a word here or there in order to make themselves sound smarter. But just because you use a bigger word does not mean your paper will turn out any better. The downfall to this is that students often use a word that they don’t understand or one that does not fit the sentence. And readers can tell. When a word does not quite fit it makes the entire paper sound odd. The verbiage turns out off kilter. This mistake can be avoided by writing what you know. If you want to use bigger words to make yourself sound smarter try reading more or expanding your vocabulary.

Avoid neglecting the audience

You need to know your audience before you submit the final paper. You need to know the group for which you are writing. If you don’t know your audience then you will end up giving the reader too much background or not enough. If you are writing for someone who is an expert in your field then there is a lot of background information that you do not need in order to explain your argument. But if you are writing for a reader unfamiliar with your field then you will need to include additional background information in order to get your point across.

Avoid using overly technical jargon

Many students who are tasked with writing a science paper or one about any form of technology will include far too many technical terms. These terms are not necessary to the purpose of the paper and are instead there to fill space. This is not going to result in you sounding smarter it will only result in a bad grade.

Make sure you always follow the specific finalizing instructions from your teacher, because they will be marking your research paper and looking for those things.

Don’t rely completely on your word processor’s spell check, because it won’t catch everything. Print your research paper if you can, and give it a good old fashioned proofread.
