How To Complete Your Term Paper In Time: Step-By-Step Instructions For Students

Before a topic is selected for your paper, it is up to you to review the assignment details carefully. This ensures that you know what your limitations are, if any, before you pick. With that, you can start the brainstorming process. Brainstorming enables you to really free your mind and consider all of the topics that are of interest to you. Why does it matter if it is of interest to you? Because, the more interested you are in the subject, the easier the writing will be. Consider beginning with a big subject and refining a topic from there.

Once you start writing, you should draft an outline. With the outline you can organize your notes and from there, draft a good first paper. Of course, you need to review and edit the first draft many times before you will find a perfect term paper. When you are writing a paper, there are stylistic considerations to take into account. Below are a few suggestions to help with that:

  • Be careful of your sentence structure. Students and scholars often make the mistake of assuming that longer is better and smarter. Students also believe that complex words make you seem stronger or more powerful. But complex sentences are not necessarily a symbol of profundity. They are really just a burden to those around you. Mix and match. Do not put in long sentences that do not read well. Break up longer sentences if you can and incorporate simple subject-verb-object sentences along the way.
  • Utilize active tense and active verbs throughout your writing.
  • Rely on standard English and avoid any colloquial turn of phrase.
  • Avoid starting off too many of your sentences with adjectival clauses. This means you want to reduce the number of sentences that start with this like “In the afternoon, he decided” because this cuts off the start of your sentence too early on.
  • Be cognizant of the length of your paragraphs. As this writing is much more demanding than most, and much longer in length, your paragraphs may in fact run a page or two in length and that is perfectly acceptable. But make sure you are only presenting one key idea per paragraph, otherwise you need to break them up.
  • Check over your transitions and ensure they exist between each paragraph.
  • Avoid word pollution by picking your words carefully and getting straight to the point.

Make sure you always follow the specific finalizing instructions from your teacher, because they will be marking your research paper and looking for those things.

Don’t rely completely on your word processor’s spell check, because it won’t catch everything. Print your research paper if you can, and give it a good old fashioned proofread.
