The Main Stages of Research Paper Writing - A Guide for Students

Every student needs to prepare him or herself for the fact that they will need to write a number of research papers during their educational activities. Research papers can be required in high school and college and knowing the fundamentals of creating a research paper will go a long way to helping you write one which gets an excellent score. There are four fundamentals which you must understand and apply when writing a research paper. These four stages are as follows.

  • It's not called a research paper for nothing.
  • Having a plan or an outline is essential.
  • The first draft is important for a number of reasons.
  • You must be your own best critic.

The title of your essay, that is a research paper, tells you that you are required to write a paper having researched the topic. So two things need to apply here. Do you have the material to use for your research? Are you able to research the material efficiently and effectively? If there is little research material relevant to your topic you are in trouble. If there is plenty of relevant material but you can't get access to it you are still in trouble. And if you have access to relevant material but you're not good at taking notes and gleaning the important information then you will need to improve and improve markedly.

Unless you have a solid outline for your research paper, your writing will become a seriously difficult task. Be in no hurry to start writing a research paper. Instead spend as much time as possible creating a rock solid outline.

The first draft of your research paper needs to be written quickly and with reference to the beautifully prepared outline beside you. The reason it’s important that you write quickly is because you will capture your first thoughts and your passion. All the research you have done and then put into your outline will come pouring out in the writing of your first draft.

But of course if you've done all of the above then you have covered three of the four main stages of research paper writing but you still have one stage to go. You must be your own best critic. By all means get your fellow students or friends or family to read through your research paper and give you their thoughts. But you must be good at reading what you've written and improving it wherever necessary.
