THE TARTUFFE
BY JAMES WILKES AFTER MOLIERE
An indefinite number of years after a career destroying scandal, lost luvvie, Orgon Poquelin presents a theatrical representation of his fall from grace at the hands of the sinister conman Tartuffe. Assisted by his troupe of faded French variety act vagabonds, Orgon attempts a performance to truly exorcise the demons of his past.
A dizzying spectacle of theatrical pandemonium, The Tartuffe is a production that will leave you exhausted from watching the troupe travelling at a break-neck speed through this madcap bedlam of a performance. Before you know it, youll be dragged up to understudy a missing troupe member or deliver a forgotten prop. Whether from itching to get onstage or from terror at being picked on, The Tartuffe will leave you on the edge of your seat; this adaptation shatters the fourth wall and happily chucks the broken fragments in the face of convention. A hilarious celebration of the very concept of theatrical performance.

Antigone - ARC
ANTIGONE
by alexander wright after sophocles
Based on Sophocles timeless tale of politics, family feuds and rituals, Alexander Wrights new adaptation is a melodic portrait of a family in the wake of devastation. Telling the story of Antigone, a princess faced with an impossible decision and the astounding repercussions this has upon her family and more dangerously, the entire country.
In this lamentful re-imagining, audience members are requested to pay their respects to the late princess, Antigone. But this is a dreamlike world; the solemn soiree that the audience find themselves part of shifts and changes. Ghosts of the recent war echo around them, the conscience of Kings stalk between them, and lovers left behind weep alongside them.

“An ageing artist invites you to join a private audience in his study as he prepares to publish his memoirs with the assistance of a frustrated ghost writer. At times a personal lounge cabaret,
at others a zombie attack and at others a spoiled New Year’s Eve party. Nothing ever clearly seems real in a play in which nothing happens, perhaps at all.
Absurd comedy reigns supreme in this dream like journey through one man’s subconscious as his own self obsession tears apart the life around him. You are invited to be part of it, to be complicit in his surreal flights of fancy. Bring an act to turn out in his cabaret, perform a striptease for his delight or smash a raw egg in his assistant’s shoe for his personal amusement.
A hilarious dip into a profoundly lonely mind.

The Beggar's Opera
by james wilkes after john gay
In 1728 John Gay’s ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ became an overnight success in it satire of politics and society and its groundbreaking new form which essentially created the musical genre. ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ is the first musical to join Belt Up Theatre’s repertoire and in a new adaptation by James Wilkes (The Tartuffe) looks to hold up a comical mirror to the society and politics of today.
Told by a troupe of 1980’s would-be political activists fired up with anti-Thatcher sentiment using John Gay’s satire as a platform for their views ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ of course has more than a few echoes with the Britain of today. Playfully meta-theatrical in Belt Up Theatre’s signature style and knowingly anachronistic jumping back and forth between today, 1988 and 1728.
Performed by a cast of six of Belt Up Theatre’s regular company members with music provided by a multi-talented band of two, audiences can expect fast and furious costume swapping, scene changes and instrument switching. Also in a top secret revelation, the vocals will be backed up by a hugely talented choir but all further details on that will be kept locked away until the show.

LORCA is DEAD
by dominic j allen
Its the year 1920 or something; the dust has started to settle on a Europe splintered by war. Out of the ashes emerges one of the most notorious art movements of the 20th century, Surrealism.
Dominic J Allens (The Trial) interactive play beckons you in to the world of the Surrealists as the likes of Artaud, Bunuel, Magritte and Salvador Dali welcome you as their colleagues. Whatever role you cast yourself in, throw caution to the wind and join them in their attempt to weave sense through a world that makes none.
Soon the actual evenings purpose of the Bureau of Surrealist research comes to light, a lamenting pageant in memory of Spanish poet, Federico Garcia Lorca. Play your part in the retelling of his life alongside those that knew him best as the construct of time ticks off the stepping stones leading to the poet, Europe and indeed the Surrealists being changed forever. At times hilarious, at others heartbreaking this is a play that twists and transforms for each audience. The only certainty is that when the clock of history sounds the end, Lorca is dead.

Octavia - arc
OCTAVIA
by jethro compton
After enchanting audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, award-winning theatre company, Belt Up Theatre are taking on tour a show specially intended for a family audience. Telling the epic tale of a lone princess forced out of her land by war and anarchy, Octavia is a story to fuel the imaginations of young and old and the perfect alternative to Pantomime this Christmas season.
Firmly set on a quest to return order to her homeland, the young princess Octavia must take the helping hand of the bizarre and mysterious characters that she meets on her travels. Inspired by the sprites, witches and hobgoblins deeply rooted in Cornish folklore, this magical adventure will bring out the child in even the most sensible of people.
Audiences will enter a world that seems miles away from an ordinary theatre: this is the world that will breathe life to a whole new time and place, a time and place where legends are still real. Octavia is an entirely active theatrical experience that does not shy away from challenging a family audience; sometimes funny, sometimes scary; sometimes smile inducing, sometimes heart breaking; always exciting, always magical. An experience that audiences of all ages will not be soon to forget.

ODYSSEY
BY DOMINIC J ALLEN, INSPIRED BY HOMER
Go on a journey alongside a lone homeward bound traveller as he seeks a safe have haven in a post apocalyptic nightmare.
A haunting adventure that tests the boundaries of human persistence.
A new play by Dominic J Allen under the influence of Homer’s epic poem, this is a claustrophobically intimate production that is certainly not for the faint of heart. A legend of monstrous proportion explodes: fast, furious and inches away from the audience’s eyes. Performed by an energetic cast of four with a dramatis personae of hundreds this is storytelling in swift, breathtaking and exhausting form.

In Jethro Compton’s site-specific adaptation of Victor Hugo’s momentous classic, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, the audience is tempted in to submerge themselves among a very special family of villainous figures taunting and goading the poor Quasimodo into telling the story of his life, a life plagued by loneliness and rejection.
But as the sad story of the Hunchback’s life unravels around you it becomes all too apparent that this is more a pitiful attempt by Quasimodo to tell the story how he wants it
rather than face the all too tragic reality.

In a warped wonderland, K must make his way through this tentative world seeking help amongst a sinisterly peculiar freak show of characters. From the spider-like helping hand of Huld to the giddily incomprehensible Titorelli, K must attempt to weave a narrative through his vague destiny.
