A tutorial on how to write a term paper introductory section

Introduction

Writing an introduction to a term paper is often the most difficult part of writing a term paper for students. Introductions are difficult, because writing an introduction is not very straightforward. With a body paragraph, you have a topic sentence, you just write about that for a while. Introductions, however, you need to grab the attention of the audience, immediately, and make sure you do not have just one more of a number of boring term papers. With a limited amount of space to make a good point, you must overcome a hurdle. However, this is quite possible; there are just several things to keep in mind.

Basic Structure

Even though introductions allow more freedom than body paragraphs, and there is a larger variety of approaches, some structure is important. There are three things introduction needs- an attention grabber, a thesis statement, and a summary of what is to follow. Attention grabbers are difficult, because there is so much you can do with them. A shocking fact will work. Dictionary definitions are widely regarding as boring and terrible, but people still use them. Telling a story is nicer. A thesis statement is nothing more than what you paper is trying to prove- what is the point of all this? In addition, of course, if you have a five-paragraph essay, you should introduce your three body paragraphs here; have some supporting points if you will.

Telling an anecdote

One of the more effective ways to open an introduction of a term paper is by telling an anecdote. This is nothing more or less than a short story that ties into your essay. If you are writing an essay about ecological conservation, for instance, consider telling a story about nature. If you are writing a persuasive essay, relate the topic to your life. You might speak in the first person here, but it is best if you do not do this for the body of your essay.

The Thesis Statement

The centerpiece of an introduction is not the attention grabber; however, it is the sentence in the middle or the end. The thesis statement is you essay it is what this is all about. The thesis statement is not a question that you are trying to answer; it is the answer in and of itself. The thesis is something that takes a good amount of work, and it should be the first thing you write down- the introduction is built around the thesis statement, not the other way around.
